You did well, and now more friends are asking you to shoot theirs as thoroughly. You find that there’s actually a big market for you in the industry. In the photography industry where it’s already full of competition, continuing into the new and growing freelance wedding videography industry might be a good idea.

Yes, venturing into wedding videography is a smart choice for enterprising creative people. But there are several things you need to research before you put a price for your services. You call for to plunge in a collection of time for research, preparation and experience. Obviously, you need a few things to get you started.

The Right Equipment

There’s both good news and moldy news already for those who want to enter the field of wedding videography. Good news is, video equipment is now very affordable and accessible to everyone. It’s easier to buy out into the industry than it was five or decennary fours seasons ago. Bad news is, technology advances so fast that your video equipment can become obsolete fast. Thus, nowadays you will need more research to know which video equipment to back in.

First off, you have to decide whether you want your videos to be cinematic or documentary with the final output. The cinematic look means you shoot it in widescreen, 16:9 ratio, rich colors, dramatic effects, steady, professional shots. Documentary wedding videos, on the other hand, offers a grittier, more amateur-ish effect, but doesn’t require all the expensive and bulky equipment you wish to shoot cinematic wedding videos.

Nowadays, you no even longer need the bulky HD professional camera equipment to produce first class wedding videos. Here is the list of the equipment you’ll hurt for to arouse videography:.

1. Digital SLR Camera with Video Capabilities.

Most videographers, film producers and even videotape studios now employ SLR cameras with video capabilities to record footage. The best option is the Canon 5D Mark II.

You need at tiniest two or three cameras in purchase to capture all the important video footage during the wedding. Of course, this does not mean that it is impossible to make a wedding video with one camera only. But this means you will only have limited footage to work with. For good example, during the dress up of the bride and groom, you can not shoot the dress up of the bride without spoiling the opportunity to shoot of the groom because all these events often take place simultaneously.

2. Appropriate Lens.

Of regimen you need the appropriate lens to be able to capture all the right shots. You will need the following:.

First, macro lens to capture determine up shots of important wedding objects and symbols like the wedding rings, shoes, bouquet, just to give a handle a few. Secondly, you need a wide angle lens to shoot wide shots like the reception venue, the cathedral, etc. Thirdly, you need mid-range lens to record the conclusive event. Place sure the lens can handle well with low light or indoor situations.

Stated above are the main purposes for these lens. As much as possible, do not use wide angle lens to shoot mid-range shots, or macro lens to shoot wide shots, and so on. However, among the best lens for videographers is the Canon 24-105 mm f/4. It can serve both wide, telephoto and mid-range purposes. You can shoot a wide scene as an establishing shot, and also zoom in to the bride and groom to capture the moment. The lens performs well in daylight situations, but also does pretty good in low light and nighttime situations with its wide aperture of 4.

3. Equipment for Stability.

Of recitation you need equipment to deliver steady and professional-looking videos. With this you need a monopod and tripod to support the camera while video recording.

Other equipment you will need is the Glidecam. Monopods and tripods are great for steady shots, but you need the Glidecam to deliver a smooth and steady performance for moving shots, such as back and forth, side to side, or up and down.

4. Audio Equipment.

Have a microphone and smart recorder to get the unavoidable audio for your wedding video. Of course, it is possible to make a wedding video without a mic and audio recorder– by simply overlapping the completed video with breeding music. The end result, however, is more of a music video than convey a story on what happened on the wedding day. Treasure that the vows, candid reviews, priest’s sermons or the best man’s toast add spice and note to the viewers.

5. Lighting.

Through nighttime situations, it helps to have decent lighting equipment. Be sure to know what equipment to use withal, as there are pros and cons when you use lighting for the occasion. Obviously having lighting provides a brighter and clearer shot, but may also blacken out the background. Another is that it can cause eye discomfort to guests and can glow up the room. Exploding without lighting can be beautiful, as it provides more candid and deliver a more natural ambiance. Just make sure to bring lighting when needed, but more often than not it’s better to rely on whatever lights is provided at the event.

you’ve probably seen similar discussions to this on other wedding blogs, however today I pined to share with you this preventive tale from a bride who had personal experience of taking the cheaper option and was unhappy with the results. Now, I know spending $3000 on a wedding photographer isn’t possible for everyone, however the point away from this post is not to bully you into plunking down for someone you can’t afford. No, I wanted to share this story with you so that you make your decision with your eyes wide open. I just hunger to be open and honest with you and to let you know that, as along most things in life, you really do get what you pay for … and if something sounds too good to be true then it probably is.

If wedding photography isn’t that big a deal to you, the great– who am I to tell you that’s perverse? However it breaks my heart when I hear from newlyweds that say ‘I wish we ‘d thought more about our wedding photography. We spent more on the cake/my dress/the flowers and now we have no exceptional photos to always remember our day’.

OK, Over to you Mrs X.

I have grilled for this post to be anonymous so who people reading this don’t think it’s a shameless marketing ploy. I may now be a professional wedding photographer myself, but I didn’t want to write this article to promote myself. No, I really just had a passion for to share this cautionary tale with those of you who might not understand the importance of having great wedding photographs.

It’s been a few years since I got married but when I gather back to it I get a sick feeling. It wasn’t the family argument that happened (don’t get me started on that!), nor was it the fact that we funded it with a loan which we are still atoning off. Nope, the sick feeling is purely centred around my foolishness and the pretty terrible images we now have to look back on for the rest of our lives.

Here I am a few years later, now a ‘pro’ photographer myself (who knew that would happen !!) and I now have a new found understanding of the skills required to shoot a wedding. I find myself wishing I knew then what I know now. You may have read articles from photographers before staying how important it is that your wedding photographer has experience, knows so how to handle lighting and uses the right equipment etc, and while I am here to reiterate these points, I’m not just here to say these things to pimp my own services. I figured this article could be a little cathartic for me and I really hope I can help you think a wee bit more about your decision– whether that be to spend money on your wedding photography, or to go to the extent of the cheaper option of hiring someone through no experience– maybe a friend with a nice camera who has offered to do it for free. Please note that a ‘nice camera’ does not a good wedding photographer make!

We got married in December and I now appreciate that winter weddings, where you spread out of the ceremony to the cold and dark, are bloody a difficult endeavor work and really difficult to photograph. I understand that romantic candle lit receptions might look gorgeous in ‘physical life’ but require a certain level of skill to capture on camera, and upon all I now know that all of the greenback I spent making the venue look beautiful and cosy was pretty much wasted. OK so our guests will always remember how beautiful the venue looked, but for me the day flew by so fast and I don’t remember much of it myself! Almost every peak I mention my wedding my Mum says ‘But it looked so beautiful’ and whilst I’m sure that’s not just her being kind (it’s really not her style) it has made me hate my own wedding because I don’t look encourage at my photos and see a beautiful wedding, I look at them and see horribly dark and blurry photos.

You see, not realizing the truthful impact of what I was doing, I asked my friend to shoot my big day. He had a DSLR and could take amazing pics of cars so he must be able to shoot my winter wedding right? Wrong!

It wasn’t his fault really, I should have learned more, understood a bit about light (or lack of it) and made things easier. But here’s the most severe part, I wasn’t on a $2000 budget, I spent quite a lot more. I prioritised wrongly. I spent more on bridesmaids dresses than I did on my photographer, more on pretty decorations than pretty images … simply put, I was a fool!

Don’t get me wrong, I know not everyone has the budget to pay much for their wedding photographer and this is not an article to make you feel bad. I say use whoever you want– a professional, a friend, whoever … it’s your wedding because of all. But I urge you to do your research first and go in the direction of through to it knowing that the results of the cheap option just won’t be the synonymous as someone with experience shooting weddings.

If you aren’t using a professional then you desire to take some responsibility and help them out a bit, consider it a creative project. Here’s the occurrences I wish I had done …

Took them to the ceremony venue at a date and time with similar light (light is so important, I can’t stress that enough) and took sample images to get the right camera settings.

Showed them the way I intended to light the reception and experienced fun taking practice images with them to get a feel for the correct look.

Checked their kit included at nadir one low light lens (2.8 f or lower … it’s the number that’s marked) and if not budgeted to hire them one for the day

Showed more interest in their work and ensured they had practiced shooting in similar lighting situations– shooting static cars in the middle of the day is nothing like shooting a wedding, with loads going on, when its dark!

Had my wedding earlier in the day … to give them a fighting chance.

Turned the coruscations up a bit for important things like the first dance and the speeches.

Most controversial of all, perhaps I should have held my wedding when the light was better and not in the winter.

Sadly I only realized how important my wedding pictures were likely after the full day. I lay low for months for images that I am now too uncomfortable to show people!

My parting words are these. If you can afford a professional wedding photographer then please please please spend as jam-packed as you can to get the best! These images mark the start of your family album and they can’t be easily redone. If you use a non ‘pro’, be sure to put some work in yourself, show an interest and consider the previous tips. Oh and finally, if your shooter is using a DSLR (and they have enough memory … RAW files average 28MB each) ask them to shoot and provide RAW images as well as JPEG (they can set their camera to do this automatically). RAW files are much easier to correct in Photoshop afterwards if you do have problems with the images, plus you could always pay someone to edit the RAW files in the future when you have the budget for it. Just remember you’re still not thriving until get the same results as with photos that were shot by a skilled professional (you can’t polish a turd after all!) but the images may be able to be improved with some clever edits in Photoshop.

My final piece of advice is this, please be careful when choosing a friend or family member to shoot your wedding. If they do a bad job it could even ruin your relationship. It kind of did ours, and that makes me even more sad.

If my words don’t convince you then have a look at my wedding photos! If you do recognize me … ssssshhhhh Mum’s the term!

It’s actually hard to put in to words how upsetting it is to look at these but mostly because I know it’s a problem of my own causing!

During the wedding preparing stage, I’ve found that people sometimes don’t fancy about hiring a wedding videographer. Some think concerning getting a friend or connected to film for them on the day. Some couples embrace to have a photographer instead, thinking that they can’t have both. Well, you can– and you should! Of method, I would say that but here’s why I believe that having a professional wedding videographer is a great idea.

Relive your wedding day– A wedding video really captures the atmosphere of the day, allowing you to be taken back and relive your treasured memories. It also means you can see things you might have missed amidst the excitement. On the day, you couldn’t be in two places at once– now you can!

Have audio from the day– One going from the best things about a wedding video is not only being able to see your memories, but hear them too. From your own voices saying your vows to the all-important speeches, a wedding videographer can capture clear audio you’ll be able to listen to again and also again.

Treasure it for generations– Having your day recorded on film means you’ll have a modern and durable way to preserve the memory. Your children and grandchildren will be able to watch the video for periods to grow, as will all of your family. Why choose a wedding video

See what the guests saw– You can finally take a notch back and see the wedding you worked so hard to plan. See how different parts of the day all chanced together and how much your guests enjoyed themselves.

No responsibility riveted on friends or family– Your guests are there to celebrate with you and enjoy the day. If they’re given the responsibility of filming, not only will they enjoy it less, you could also switch off up with a very poor quality video! Hiring a professional wedding videographer ensures that you have excellent video and audio quality, as well as happy guests.

Most importantly, have it done your way– Having a professional film your wedding doesn’t mean it’s out of your control. Whether you want to use particular music or focus on a certain aspect, I will work closely with your vision and produce the video you want.

The day you get married is one you’ll remember forever. But unlike memories, videos won’t fade. Wedding cinematography is a wonderful inclusion to your day, and a wonderful way to preserve the memories.

1. Film Short Clips

Short Video Clips Wedding Video Tips

This is truly the unsurpassed single piece of advice I can give for filming. Aside with the ceremony, toasts, speeches, most of the clips I take are less than 5 seconds long; and they get so much as shorter when I edit them. The goal is to make your wedding video enjoyable to watch. The leading thing to think about when you are trying to figure outside how to make your wedding video enjoyable to watch is think about the media people watch now. Beat a look at Hollywood movies and commercials on television. Go turn on the television perfectly now and watch 6-7 commercials. Most of the commercials are thirty seconds. Count how divers times the camera cuts during those thirty seconds. Average that out. You may find that there are 15-20 cuts per thirty seconds. That means that each shot is simply on screen for only about two seconds. There’s a good chance you ‘d never realized that before.
2. Delete as You Go

Delete Clips as you Go Deleting bad clips as you go was never possible before digital, but it is now and it serves two great purposes. The first feeds the second: video editing takes more time than actually filming the wedding. I ‘d say editing usually takes 3-4 longer than the horde of hours you film for. It takes two seconds to delete the bad shots as you are filming– that means you don’t land to sift through them when it comes time to edit. The less time you spend sifting, the fewer hours you annex to spend editing– this take to a high dollar per hour rate at the end of the day.
3. Visit the Venue if you Can

Visit the Venue Buying off at least mildly conscious with the venue and what the wedding will be like can help you prepare; at microscopic mentally. The gear you will need can change if it is a 30 person chapel or a huge Catholic Cathedral. Consider if the ceremony is outdoors or indoors– how great natural light is there?
4. Multiple Cameras Helps including # 1 and Gives Options

Filming with Multiple Cameras If you have the gear, resources, and help, having a second camera will add a lot of production value to your videography; especially important during the ceremony. It’s not uncommon for a shot on camera An in front of be ruined by the back of someones head or an accidental kick of the tripod leg or a host of other incidents. If that’s your only camera, then there’s almost nothing you can absolutely do in editing; and imagine if that incident happens during the ring exchange, first kiss etc. If you don’t own multiple cameras, consider renting them for your wedding video.
5. Capture Good Feature Audio

Good Quality Audio Wedding Video Most people, especially those just making started, forget or don’t think audio matters that much. The dumb truth is, audio is 50 % of video. I say dumb because it seems so obvious; but don’t think for a second that audio doesn’t matter. I’ll prove it. Have you ever watched a movie, maybe it was a bootleg version and the video quality wasn’t that great, but you finished the movie anyway and enjoyed the film. Now, have you ever started to watch something but you couldn’t hear the actors, or maybe a kindred member was being too loud or running the vacuum. Point is, people will tolerate a non-perfect picture, but they will not continue watching if the audio is awful. If you are short-term on equipment, try sticking a smart phone in the breast pocket of the officiant or groom. There are loads of mp3 recording apps– this is a good solution in a pinch. In the thing that you don’t get good audio, don’t despair; you can still create a great wedding video by pressing into service powerful music (suggestions).
6. Don’t Zoom

Do not zoom when filming wedding video If you want your video to look 10 years old, use the zoom feature on your camera. Watch a movie. Watch television. You will not see them use zoom. The camera will move. This add excitement to the shot. Now, during the ceremony you might wish to have to use the long and wide shots your camera is capable of. In other words, if you are wide for a few minutes, you can zoom in to the long end of your camera lens, but do it fast get it over with. Hopefully you can cut to camera B while camera A is zooming in.
7. Lighting Your Shots

Lighting a Wedding Video There are differing opinions when it numbers to lighting a wedding video. When it comes to the ceremony, most churches won’t even allow it; and personally, I’ve never even considered lighting a church. A the reception, it’s another ball proceeding. We really never uses lighting unless it is absolutely necessary and even then we will use as little light as possible. We have an LED dimable light that we can use, but the last thing we hanker to do is shine a spot light on someone dancing. The best video is usually candid and a bright shiny light in someones face nice of blows that. Get to sure you have a camera that performs well in low light, like a DSLR and make sure you understand the Camera ISO settings.
Remember When

Filming a wedding may sound easy, but it has become an art form over the olden days decade. This is mostly thanks to the computer and non-linear video editing. The reality is that most wedding videography of yesteryear was drab and static because editing video was abutting to impossible. Most weddings that were recorded were simply filmed for posterity’s sake; simply to document an event. To add music or edit the VHS required editing booths with multiple video decks and was likely even more time consuming than it is today.

Great, you have decided to hire a Wedding Videographer! No matter what your budget is, every vendor is a piece of that budget and as such you should spend your money in the smartest way possible. Here are 8 Questions to help you make your decision when the time comes to select your wedding videographer.

1 I hate to say it, but before you ask any questions you need to have a good idea about what your budget is. I never like to see a bride fall in love with something she can’t afford. Like on that show – say yes to the dress – they always let the bride try on a dress they know is three times over her budget. That’s one reason we think wedding videographers should be up front and open about their prices.

2 So, now you have your budget, the first thing you want to find out is what the videographers style is – and more importantly, is it what you like, what you want, and the style you are looking for? Some videographers film with camcorders, others with DSLRs. Do you like sharp video or soft out of focus backgrounds? Is the editing more documentary style or cinematic with music and fancy footage?

First Rodeo?

3 It’s highly unlikely that you find a videographer that hasn’t filmed many weddings. That said, you don’t want to be a guinea-pig on your big day. That doesn’t mean you need to find a videographer that has filmed 100 weddings, but you just want to see some insurance that you are indeed hiring a professional. Make sure to look at a handful of their video examples.

Who are you?

4 Is the person you are talking with the actual person who will be filming that day? Try to talk to the actual videographer and make sure you are looking at footage that your videographer shot and edited personally. Don’t get scammed by a mega studio who show their best video’s but you don’t know who your are going to get when the big day comes.

Are you busy?

5 Make sure the person or company you are hiring is not too busy to do your job. You should expect to receive your final discs in a reasonable amount of time–get an estimated delivery date, preferably in writing–in your contract.

That looks expensive.

6 Make sure your videographer is using professional grade equipement. What kind of cameras are they using? Microphones? If the answers don’t mean anything to you, then just ask them to elaborate why they use the equipment they do.

Backup Camera?

7 This is a simple question and the answer is not very technical. Just make sure your videographer is using multiple cameras. Even professional gear can fail and though it’s nobody’s fault it can be very bad for you. Just make sure the videographer is prepared appropriately.

Lights, Camera, Action.

8 Does the videographer use a light? If yes, how bright is it? High-end professional video equipment can get great quality video even in low light. The last thing you want is your videographer ruining the ambiance and romantic setting of your reception.

I hope these questions are helpful when it comes time to talk to your wedding videographer. If you are not that far yet, that’s okay. Here are some tips to help you find a wedding videographer worth talking to.

A wedding video is the most valuable part of a wedding that too many brides overlook. I can’t even begin to recount through what agency many times people say to me, “I wish I would have had a wedding videographer.” Shortly after our clients receive their wedding video, we get notes from older siblings and parents letting us know just tips about how much they feel they missed outdoors at their own weddings. Maybe it’s the way new technology has enabled us to capture such beautiful, cinematic footage of weddings without having to charge and arm and a leg, or maybe it’s that the moments of a wedding (though they take forever to plan) pass by in the blink of an eye. Whatever it is, the value of a wedding video has never been higher.

It’s true that a picture is worth a thousand words, but a video is a thousand words and a thousand pictures. For anyone that is on the fence about hiring a professional wedding videographer or anyone that wants reassurance that they are making one of the choicest decisions of their lives, there are 5 essential motivations why deciding against capturing your day on video is a big mistake.

1. Memories Fade. With each passing year, the stories get shorter and names change. The original speech your brother gave that made everyone laugh slowly morphs into what you argue may have been a zinger from dad or a wise crack from a cousin. When your 25th anniversary arrives, you have an easier time recalling what you ate, than what anybody said or did. Fortunately, you have your wedding movie to help you remember.

2. Blink Of An Eye. You spend months (or even years) planning an event that comes and goes in a matter of hours. As the bride and groom, you start your day getting dressed and moving from one place to the next. The ceremony joins and goes in a matter of minutes. After your photo shoot, you are eating dinner and entertaining to speeches, still trying to comprehend that you just got married! Next thing you know, your friends and family are seeing you off and you wake up the next morning feeling like you had just been through a whirlwind. At this point, there is no better feeling than knowing that in a few weeks, you’ll be receiving your wedding video and will have the chance to figure out exactly where the day went.

3. What You May Have Missed. As the bride is the last one to walk down the aisle, she clearly won’t be able to see the bridal party walk before her or her niece throwing the flowers that took months to arrange. She will miss her dog trotting the ring down the aisle and the laughter of the crowd when they see the adorable arrival sign her nephew carried. Fleeting moments like these are forever gone and will never be seen by the bride … unless of course you have a wedding video.

4. Words Are Worth A Thousand Pictures. Your maid of honor “googled” every brides maid speech ever written and the best man spent weeks combing through draft after draft trying to figure out the best balance of heart felt and funny. Your father contemplated for years what he would say when the day would come when he would have to give his little girl away. You spent lifetimes dreaming of your vows and shed love-filled tears trying to deliver them. Some moments deserve more than just a picture. They deserve a wedding video.

5. You’re The Star. Let’s face it, for most of us there will only be a few moments in our lives when all eyes are on us and only one time when we spend months and years planning and preparing to have a celebration of our own personal love. For one night only, you and your lover are the stars of a beautiful love  that you got to design and direct. Your wedding is your own personal piece of time, an art piece that should be treasured forever. To not capture the event as completely as possible would be a disservice to all the beauty the moment has to offer.

It breaks my heart every shot I hear “I wish I would have gotten a wedding video.” I know that there is no way to go back in time and film those moments that have come and gone. As a wedding photographer, I know the power of capturing a single moment. As a wedding videographer in melbourne, I know the power of capturing time itself.
